James co-founded GenoLogics, grew a great team, raised Venture Capital, and sold genomics systems into pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, and hospitals in North America and Europe. James lead the GenoLogics product efforts and market strategy. GenoLogics was recently acquired by Illumina, the world leader in Human Genome Sequencing.
James recently co-founded ChatterBlock, a local web company for parents in cities throughout North America, and is involved in many other Victoria start-ups, angel investing, and keen to give back to the Victoria start-up and technology scene.
Stephanie Andrew is the former VP Finance at TIMIA Capital. Previously Stephanie was Associate Partner, Diligence at Espresso Capital, an innovative financial firm that provides tax credit and recurring revenue financing to growing technology companies. At Espresso, Stephanie led due diligence and risk assessment efforts on over 100 corporate debt/equity financings ranging from one hundred thousand to several million dollars and was actively involved in shaping the company’s credit scoring methodology and compliance practices.
Stephanie is an active investor in early stage companies, a Client Advisory Board member with the University of Victoria’s Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurship program and a former Board member with the CFA Society Victoria. Stephanie completed a MSc in Molecular Biology and Medical Genetics at the University of Toronto, an MBA at the Schulich School of Business and is a CFA charterholder.
Richard Egli is the Managing Director of the Alacrity Foundation, a venture builder that invests in and supports entrepreneurs creating thriving technology companies. Richard spearheaded Alacrity’s Investor Readiness Program, which brought $225M of investment into the BC technology sector. He currently runs the Clean Tech Scale Up program connecting BC Cleantech companies with global export and investment opportunities in rapidly developing areas. Richard also manages the strategic direction and operation of the foundation, and sits on the advisory boards of multiple technology startups.
Richard is an active investor in technology companies and real estate projects. He has led real estate development projects with values upward of $50M across Western Canada and the U.S. He continues to source and provide unique work spaces in the growing technology community of Victoria.
Richard holds a B.Com in Entrepreneurship from Royal Roads University and a MBA from the University of Victoria with a specialization in real estate, venture capital, and finance.
Shaun has collected 15+ years of progressive operational experience in Senior Leadership roles within E-commerce Marketplace, Software as a Service (SaaS), and Design and Development companies.
Shaun built businesses through bootstrapping and raising capital, has been through multiple acquisitions, and has deep operational experience in early and late stage tech companies. He has held several progressive roles including CEO of SilkStart (acquired), Director of Sales & Account Management @ AbeBooks (acquired by Amazon), and CEO of FillZ (acquired by AbeBooks).
Shaun was an Amazon Bar Raiser and is passionate about helping individuals and purpose driven organizations grow and realize their potential. You'll find Shaun helping entrepreneurs navigate the early stages of their business where he selectively advises and/or invests in early stage companies.
Paula has an Honours Undergraduate Science Degree from University of Toronto and a 20 year career in industry and government. For many years she has channeled her passion and energy into supporting those who are vulnerable“at the edge” and need small, immediate, and unconditional assistance to remain educated, safe and in control of their lives.
Paula is a founding member of the Women’s Equity Lab that won the 2019 Investor of the Year at the Viatech Awards. Paula is a current Board Director of Craigdarroch Castle and the United Way of Greater Victoria. She is also a former Member of United Way Greater Victoria Individual Giving Cabinet, founding member Major Gifts Cabinet,the Community Cabinet and founding and first member of their Women United initiative. She also holds a Donor Advised Fund at the United Way. Her current focus is on the annual Navy Sails with invited donors and continued support of BC211.ca Paula personally supports Dance Victoria, Victoria Conservatory of Music, Craigdarroch Castle, Kidsport British Columbia, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Royal Museum of British Columbia.
She lives in Victoria, is happily married for 40 years and has 2 grown children which she calls her Vancouver Child and her Zurich child. :-) For fun she has taught yoga for the last 20 years.
Owen joined Wesley Clover as a General Partner in 2004 and has invested in Echosec Systems, Encepta Corp., HYAS, Pretio Interactive, Referral SaaSquatch, and Tutela Technologies. Prior to joining Wesley Clover, Owen founded NewHeights Software, a pioneer in enterprise unified communication software which was eventually acquired by CounterPath Corporation.
With his love of tech and creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs, Owen co-founded Alacrity Foundation. The Alacrity Foundation provides an intense incubation environment to prepare graduates for entrepreneurship in the tech industry. We warmly welcomed Owen onto the CIN board in late 2017.
Rob has been involved in multiple local tech companies as a software
developer, founder, investor, mentor and coach. He’s also participated in
various community organizations and boards, always with a keen eye to
community and economic development. Though Rob started in the technical
track, he quickly learned how it’s people that make the difference.
Rob has been working with VIATEC in different roles for over 15 years,
alongside a team of passionate people supporting innovation and
entrepreneurship in tech companies. His current role is Chief Operating
Officer and Program Director, assisting entrepreneurs with the development
of their start-up and early stage companies through a variety events,
programs and resources, most notably the VIATEC Accelerator Program.
DR. HANNES BLUM
Dr. Hannes Blum is currently Venture Partner North America for Acton Capital, a Munich based VC fund focused on consumer internet. He started his career with The Boston Consulting Group in Germany and founded his first company (JustBooks GmbH) with colleagues of his PhD program in 1999. After selling his business to AbeBooks.com, he was asked to take over as CEO of AbeBooks which brought him and his family to Canada in 2003. After acquiring 5 companies, he sold AbeBooks to Amazon.com in 2008 and stayed on as a VP for Amazon until May 2015. He is an active Angel Investor and loves to spend time with his wife and 2 children, on tennis courts, ski hills and golf courses.
Hannes joined because he would love to see more start-up success stories in Victoria.
Jordan grew up in the quiet town of Qualicum Beach. In high school, he joined the family’s grocery business, Quality Foods (QF). At the age of 26, Jordan was given the opportunity to run a Quality Foods store in Courtenay. He later opened award-winning stores in Langford and View Royal and managed various aspects of the QF business until it was sold. Jordan has also founded a mobile app company for enabling hospitality businesses to send out real-time promotions to monetize unused capacity and has run a company with his brother that provides nutritional bars. Jordan is passionate about community involvement and is involved with the Food Bank, The Soup Kitchen and Jeneece Place.
Nagma holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and a double specialization in service management and entrepreneurship from Gustavson School of Business. During her time at Gustavson School of Business, she was the President of Young Women in Business. She led and organized countless educational programs and networking events that connected female students with ambitious women to help them step into the workforce or grow their business with the proper set of tools and knowledge to reach their fullest potential.
In addition, Nagma has co-founded an e-commerce company that promotes sustainability and helps individuals reduce their carbon footprint by replacing their single-use face pads with alternative, reusable organic face pads.
